Fostering Ethical Citizenship: Case Studies on Value-Based Education and its Impact on Social Cohesion and Civic Responsibility in Indian Schools
Author: Dr. Priyanka Arora
Abstract
This research investigates the degree to which morality embedded within value-based education curricula in Indian schools produces quantifiable indicators of citizenship and societal development. This study employs a qualitative multiple-case study design using secondary data analysis of institutional reports, scholarly publications, and policy documents related to three Indian schools implementing structured value-based education programs. The design of this qualitative multiple-case study consists of a secondary data analysis of various reports (i.e., institutional report, scholarly articles, government publications, and public assessment documentation) that will be the basis for employing a thematic content analysis of the selected institutions. Theoretical frameworks supporting this study include Bandura’s Social Learning Theory, Kohlberg’s Moral Development Theory, and humanistic ideas. The findings of this study reveal that when experiential learning, moral education, and stakeholder engagement are systematically incorporated into the school environment, social cohesion, civic participation, and moral awareness increase in school-based communities.
This study presents a structured conceptual evolution between institutions’ value-integration processes and observable indicators of societal development, and the operationalization of societal development as it relates to each of the three inter-related aspects examined. This study strengthens both the theoretical and empirical support for value-based education by clarifying conceptual pathways and providing concrete case evidence to support the ongoing debate.
